About the Historical Society

The Pocahontas County Historical Society was organized in 1961 and incorporated on July 1, 1962.  The Society purchased the Hunter House in Marlinton, West Virginia, which was renovated and dedicated as a Museum on June 5, 1963.

With the help of Eugene Burner, the Society began collecting historic photographs in 1963.  The collection has grown to over 4,500 photos which are now being digitized and archived.

In 1967, under the leadership of Johnnie B. Hill and Robert Jacobson, the Society gave birth to Pioneer Days.  The three-day event became so popular that it was turned over to a community organization.  Pioneer Days is held annually in Marlinton, WV, and is now in its 45th year.

The Kee Cabin, built in 1845-1840, was donated to the Historical Society in 1969 and was moved to the Museum grounds.  In 1976 the Frank and Anna Hunter House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.  That summer the Museum hosted nearly 3,000 visitors.

In 1981 the Society published "History of Pocahontas County, W. Va. 1981."  This book is the most extensive history published on the county and is still in print today.
